Create an easy ice cream seller’s hat and have fun making a pretend ice cream shop in the garden. Kids will love serving real ice cream in cones – or try making some pretend ones out of of play dough or make believe papercraft ice cream cones if the weather is chilly!
Materials
- Thin card or thick paper for hat headband
- Thick cardboard (e.g. from brown corrugated box)
- Cotton wool balls
- Hessian material
- Popsicle stick
- Brown pen
- PVA craft glue
We used hessian material to make a wafer texture. You could also draw criss crosses onto brown cardboard with a brown pen.
How to Make an Ice Cream Seller Hat
- Cut two ice cream shapes out of thick corrugated cardboard.
- Stick a scrap of hessian material over the cone area and trim.
- Glue on 3 cotton wool balls to make the scoops of ice cream.
- Colour in the popsicle stick with brown pen. Cut in half to make two chocolate flake sticks. Stick one onto the back of each ice cream or poke into one of the corrugated cardboard channels.
- Cut two strips of thin card to make a headband. Each strip should be a few inches longer than the width of the head.
- Put both strips together and pinch the two ends. Tape the two edge pieces (top, bottom and sides) to fit the head comfortably.
- Glue the ice creams on and write “ICE CREAM” on the front.
Your ice cream seller’s hat is ready to wear. Make a sign and set up a little stall to serve your real or pretend ice creams.
